How to Create an MS-DOS Boot Disk
Microsoft Windows XP comes with a utility that allows you to create
an MS-DOS boot disk. DOS is a simple operating system that you can
use to recover files and data if your system happens to crash. These
boot disks are fairly easy to make and can be invaluable if you have
a problem that requires you to have one handy.
In order to create an
MS-DOS boot disk using the steps in this tutorial, you will want to
be running the popular Windows XP operating system.
1. In order to create an MS-DOS boot disk you will need a blank
floppy disk, or a disk with data that you do not care about. Make
sure that you are not formatting over something important. Your
computer will also obviously need a floppy disk drive, which is a
feature that is becoming less common nowadays.
2. Insert your desired disk into the floppy drive. You should make
sure that the slidable write protect tab does covers the hole, so
that your computer will be able to write to the disk. In this
tutorial, your floppy drive is assumed to be drive A.
3. Locate drive A in windows explorer. To do this, click on My
Computer, where you should see an icon of a floppy drive with the
title "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)". Right click and select Format.
4. In the format dialog, select the radio button that says "Create
an MS-DOS Boot Disk" or "Create and MS-DOS Startup Disk". CLick
start, and wait for the program to finish formatting and tell your
that your disk is ready, Do not remove the disk from the drive while
it is being written to.
