Avoid Computer Problems: Update Your Drivers
If you want to prevent your computer from continually crashing,
shutting down unexpectedly, sending you error messages, or not
shutting down properly, you need to ensure you have installed the
correct and up-to-date drivers. A driver is a software program that
works behind the scenes, sending instructions between your
computer’s operating system and the software and hardware products
you have installed on your computer. Old and out-of-date computer
drivers can cause havoc on your computer.
Your computer operating system, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, has
particular programming instructions built in. Each operating system
is different though, and may expect to receive the same instructions
in a completely different format or code than the next operating
system. Different versions of the same operating system, such as
Windows 98 and Windows Vista, will have different coding
instructions or experience operating differences to each other.
However, when you buy a computer accessory or hardware product that
you attach to your computer, such as a printer, a camera, a webcam,
or a USB attachment, you need the generic hardware to interact
successfully with your specific computer operating system. This is
where a driver comes in. The correct driver will run a translation
of the codec or programming languages used by both the hardware
device and your computer operating system.
When you attach your printer to your computer, you may have to
install a computer disk that arrives with your printer. This disk
allows your computer operating system to locate and download the
specific driver that can translate between the operating system and
the printer. However, sometimes you are better off searching for the
latest drivers on the internet, rather than relying on a disk
version that could be several months or even years old.
Computer programmers and hardware designers update drivers
regularly, as users discover errors, bugs, or new security issues.
The latest and most up to date driver will have these errors fixed,
and will cause less problems for your computer’s operating system.
Installing older computer drivers on your computer can cause more
problems, if the hardware designer created the driver before your
operating system existed. This is a special problem if your
operating system is a newer version, such as Windows Vista. Hardware
manufacturers will provide up-to-date drivers that are compatible
with the latest versions of computer operating system for all their
products on their websites.
Out-of-date or wrongly installed computer drivers will not be able
to communicate effectively with your computer operating system. To
avoid the common problems of crashes, error messages, frozen
screens, or the computer either shutting down unexpectedly, or not
being able to shut down or start up properly, you should update your
computer drivers regularly.
